Moving On and Off Vancouver Island
A move between Victoria and the mainland is part road trip, part ferry crossing. A bit of planning keeps it on schedule.
Request a moverWhich ferry
Most household moves use BC Ferries between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen. Moves to the Sunshine Coast or up island use other routes. Ask the mover which they plan to use.
Book early
Summer, long weekends and month-end are busy. Movers need reservations for large vehicles, and space can sell out.
Costs
Ferry fares for a moving truck add to the price. Ask whether they're included in the quote.
Timing
The crossing, loading and unloading can add hours. A move that would be a short drive on the mainland may take a full day.
Weather
Sailings are sometimes cancelled in high winds. Ask how the mover handles delays.
Delivery windows
Long-distance and shared-load moves often have a delivery window rather than a set day. Get it in writing.
Your own trip
Book your own ferry, especially with pets or a second vehicle.

Moving onto the island
If you're moving to Victoria, think about where you'll stay if the truck arrives a day or two after you. Booking your own ferry and a night's accommodation as a backup takes the pressure off.
Vehicles
If you're shipping a car separately, ask whether the mover can carry it or recommend a vehicle shipper. Driving it over yourself on the ferry is often simpler.
Up-island moves
Moves to Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley or the Comox Valley follow the Malahat. Winter snow and ice on the Malahat can close lanes or slow traffic, so build in flexibility.
