Esquimalt at a glance
Esquimalt is a compact township of 17,533 people in 2021 covering just over seven square kilometres, bordered by Victoria, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Esquimalt Harbour and the Gorge. It's home to the Pacific fleet of the Royal Canadian Navy.
What that means for your move
With the naval base here, military postings bring regular moves in and out, often with set report dates. Esquimalt also has many apartment buildings and older homes with suites, so stairs and tight entrances are common. See condo and apartment moves.
Dense streets
Esquimalt is one of the more densely settled municipalities in the region. Parking a large truck can take planning, and some streets are narrow; ask about loading arrangements ahead of time.
An ancient harbour
First Nations people settled here about 4,000 years before Europeans arrived, and the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations live here today. The harbour has been a naval base since the days of sail. Neighbourhoods include Saxe Point, West Bay and Gorge Vale. Older character homes may have narrow stairs, porches and heavy antique furniture, so point out anything awkward; see pianos and heavy items.
