Saanich at a glance
Saanich is the largest municipality in Greater Victoria by both population and area, with 117,735 people in 2021 across about 103 square kilometres. It runs from city neighbourhoods next to Victoria out to farms and rural roads on the Saanich Peninsula.
What that means for your move
Saanich covers everything from Gordon Head houses and Royal Oak townhomes to rural properties in Blenkinsop and waterfront homes at Cadboro Bay. Moves here vary widely, so describe the access at both ends: driveways, stairs, sheds and long paths. See local moves.
Students and university moves
The University of Victoria and Camosun College sit partly or wholly in Saanich, so late August, September and late April bring a wave of suite and room moves. Booking early helps; see condo and apartment moves.
Farms, schoolhouses and stars
The Hudson's Bay Company arrived in the 1840s, and the Craigflower Schoolhouse, built in the 1850s, is the oldest surviving school building in Western Canada. Saanich was incorporated on March 1, 1906. The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory's telescope was the largest of its kind in the world when built. Rural properties with barns and outbuildings often need extra time and trucks; mention them when you get a quote.
