Sidney at a glance
Sidney is a town of 12,318 people in 2021 at the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula, just east of Victoria International Airport and about six kilometres from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal.
What that means for your move
Sidney has one of the oldest populations in the region, with a median age that was about 60 in 2001 and more than a third of residents over 65. Many moves here are downsizing from a family home into a condo or seniors' residence, which needs extra planning and sorting. See downsizing moves.
Close to the ferries
Being minutes from Swartz Bay makes Sidney a natural start or end for moves to the mainland. Sidney is also the only Canadian stop for Washington State Ferries, with sailings to the San Juan Islands and Anacortes. See ferry moves.
A marine town
Captain George Henry Richards named nearby Sidney Island in 1859, and the town took its name from it. Highway 17, the Pat Bay Highway, runs north-south through town, with condos, shops and the waterfront to the east. Sidney's climate is mild with little snow, but winter rain still calls for good wrapping; many condo buildings here have elevator bookings and move-hour rules.
