Moving in Victoria's Rainy Season
Victoria's winters are mild but wet. A rainy-day move needs a little extra protection.
Request a moverWrap everything
Furniture should be blanket-wrapped and, where needed, covered in plastic for the walk to the truck.
Protect floors
Floor runners and door mats keep mud and water off floors at both homes.
Boxes
Use sturdy boxes and tape bottoms well; wet cardboard weakens.
Electronics
Keep TVs and computers in their boxes or wrapped tightly.
Paths
Clear moss and leaves from steps and paths to reduce slips.
Easier booking
Winter is usually quieter for movers, so you may have more choice of dates.
Short days
Daylight is limited in December and January. Start early.

Dry out on arrival
Open boxes of clothing and linens soon after the move so anything damp can dry, and wipe down furniture that got wet before it goes against a wall.
Ask about covers
Ask the mover what they use to keep furniture dry between the door and the truck, such as plastic wrap, mattress bags and covered ramps.
Mattresses and soft furniture
Mattresses, sofas and upholstered chairs soak up water quickly. Ask the mover to use mattress bags and plastic covers, and carry them out last and in first.
Keep a dry zone
Set aside one room or area at each home as a dry zone for boxes and furniture, away from the doorway where water gets tracked in.
Plan for wind
Winter storms bring wind as well as rain. If the forecast looks rough, talk to the mover about the plan, especially for a ferry move.
