Checking a Moving Company in BC
Unlike electricians or gasfitters, household movers in BC don't need a trade certification. That makes your own checks more important.
Request a moverAsk around
Get referrals from friends and family, and check reviews and the Better Business Bureau.
Written estimate
Get the estimate in writing, with full details of what's included.
Insurance
Ask what coverage the mover provides and its limits. Check what your home insurance covers during a move.
Replacement value
Basic coverage may pay little for damaged items. Replacement-value coverage costs more but protects more.
Very low prices
Be suspicious of quotes far below others.
Deposits
Avoid large cash deposits and get receipts for any payment.
Claims
Inspect items on delivery and report damage quickly.
Get started
Send a request and a moving company will get in touch.
Read the paperwork
Before the truck leaves, check the inventory or bill of lading lists everything and notes any existing damage. Sign only what you agree with, and keep a copy.
Moving scams
Warning signs include a price far below others, a large cash deposit, no physical address, a different company name on the paperwork, or a mover who holds belongings until you pay more. Walk away if something doesn't feel right.
Workers' compensation
Ask whether the company's workers are covered by WorkSafeBC. If a mover is injured in your home, coverage matters.
Get it in writing
Keep the estimate, contract, inventory and receipts together. If there's a dispute, they're your record of what was agreed.
