Getting a Written Moving Estimate
A clear written estimate protects you from surprises on moving day. Here's how to get an accurate one.
Request a moverGive full details
List everything that's moving, including sheds, garages, storage lockers and crawl spaces. Mention special items and access problems at both ends.
In-home or video survey
For larger moves, a walk-through or video tour gives the mover a much better idea than a phone estimate.
What it should include
Crew size, truck, hourly rate or fixed price, travel charges, packing materials, ferry fares, disassembly, and any extra charges for stairs or long carries.
Hourly vs fixed price
Hourly estimates depend on how long the move takes. A fixed price gives certainty but may have conditions.
Be wary of very low quotes
A price far below others can mean hidden charges later. Ask how they reached the number.
Deposits
Ask how much deposit is required and when the balance is due.
Compare like with like
Line quotes up item by item.
Get started
Send a request and a moving company will get in touch.
What changes the price
Extra items that weren't on the list, access that wasn't described, waiting time if keys aren't ready, and last-minute packing can all add to the final bill. Telling the mover everything up front avoids most surprises.
Payment on delivery
Ask how the final payment is handled and what forms of payment are accepted. Don't sign the final paperwork until you've checked your belongings have arrived.
Questions to ask
Is the price hourly or fixed? When does the clock start and stop? Are there charges for stairs, long carries, fuel or ferries? What happens if the move takes longer than expected?
